UNDERSTANDING YOUR GUT WITH HEALTH COACH MARIAM BEGG (PART 1)

Hey! I’m Mariam Begg, health and nutrition coach and I’m so excited to be a part of #CosmixGutResetWeek! I’m here to talk about all things gut; the dos and don’ts, the whys and why nots, so let’s dive right in, shall we?

Most people make their peace with chronic acidity, reflux, indigestion, gas, digestive distress, sensitivity, autoimmune conditions and even diabetes. Most people believe that there is no way to control or reverse these conditions and their symptoms. I’m here to tell you there is a way out.

I grew up Muslim and Anglo-Indian, which meant a lot of food, celebrations and a lot of meat. I got addicted to sugar very early on and it never really went away. This led to me developing multiple health issues like PCOS, severe allergies, brain fog, sleep issues, sugar spikes and of course it all resulted in a very sensitive gut. I also developed more serious issues like cervical spondylosis. This, combined with my crippling anxiety, left me a functioning mess. But even through this, I was a very successful model and travelled the world shooting advertisements.

One fine day I found myself at a shoot on a wellness rejuvenation farm. It was here that I learnt that almost 85% of all diseases stemmed from the gut! Even then I couldn’t really grasp the full extent of that statement. Nevertheless, it stayed with me for many years to come. That discovery slowly led to a full-blown awareness of what foods I ingested and I really started giving fiber and vegetables a lot more respect.

Understanding the gut-brain axis

Think of your gut as your second brain. Understanding how your gut works, can be so helpful in deconstructing your health issues. For example, we know that gastrointestinal problems can create anxiety and stress. We also know that anxiety and stress can make GI problems worse. For me it’s a simple connection - the gut and the brain work in tandem with each other. If we eat foods that are not nourishing or are damaging to our gut, our moods, focus and general well-being will get affected. Similarly, if we are anxious and stressed our guts cannot process, digest or absorb foods, no matter how good they are for us.

What is gut dysbiosis?

In simple terms, it means an imbalance of the microorganisms in your gastrointestinal tract. Even a small dysbiosis in your gut, can lead to skin, mental health, immune and several other issues. It’s that big of a ripple effect! This is why keeping your gut mitochondria happy and healthy is the most important thing you need to do in your life.

More important than spending thousands on that night serum, that anti-aging mask, those clothes or anything else.

The sad part is, I see so many of my clients struggling with pain and discomfort and yet concentrating on every other thing other than healing the gut. If you are facing gastrointestinal distress of any kind, take my advice and look into it seriously - immediately! Keep in mind, “if you don't listen to your body when it whispers, you will have to hear it when it screams”.
