BRINGING BALANCE TO YOUR GUT WITH HEALTH COACH MARIAM BEGG (PART 2)

BRINGING BALANCE TO YOUR GUT WITH HEALTH COACH MARIAM BEGG (PART 2)

Hey, I’m health and nutrition coach, Mariam Begg, here to talk to you about gut health! In the last blog post, we touched about the importance of taking care of your gut. Now, let's dive into HOW?

Your gut is the main gateway for nutrients to enter your body and so getting it to functioning to an optimum level, is key. If it's blocked or can't process certain foods, then you lose out on vital nutrients and nourishment. So even if you’re eating really clean nourishing food, your body will not be able to absorb it.

Basically, more than what you eat, YOU ARE WHAT YOU ABSORB.

Worried about your gut health? Don't be! A diagnosed gut issue is not a life sentence. No matter how mild or severe the condition, there are things you can do.

Cut out allergens

Identify and be aware of allergens in your food. Be it wheat, gluten, dairy, animal products, processed foods etc., cutting them out of your diet will make a huge difference!

Add vibrant healthy foods

Fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, greens, herbs & some whole grains are all helpful. If you are sensitive to raw plant foods, start by gently cooking or steaming your produce, and then you can cook it less and less until your body can accept the raw, natural state of these optimally nutritious foods. This will develop a whole new strain of vital, vibrant gut flora.

Nuts, seeds, pulses and whole beans need to be soaked and preferably sprouted wherever possible to reduce enzyme inhibitors and get filled with live nutrition. This will also ensure digestion gets easier leading to reduced bloating and gas.

Take your probiotics

Improve your ‘Gut Biome’ by adding fermented probiotic foods like - Kimchi, Sauerkraut, Kefir, Kombucha. Alternatively, you can start taking a probiotic supplement - Probiotics are live bacteria that can help restore the gut to a healthy state after dysbiosis. They do this by “reseeding” it with healthy microbes.

Get your polyphenols and fiber

Polyphenols are plant compounds found in green tea, berries, flax, turmeric & even raw cacao. They are broken down by the microbiome to stimulate healthy bacterial growth. Fiber is present in almost all plant foods and are so essential in adding bulk and helping safe passage during elimination. Here I would also add hygroscopic foods like chia seeds, flax seeds, aloe and flea seed husk (Isabgol) and these are great in aiding digestion.

Don’t forget your herbs

Herbs are so good for you! Apart from being medicinal, they help chelate heavy metals and heal your body from distress. Add them liberally to your foods. Even boiling a few basil (tulsi) leaves in water and drinking it will alleviate your stomach issues. Ajwain water, jeera water and other digestives like ginger, miso and essential oils, also aid in protecting your gut health. Cosmix My Happy Gut also helps you keep up your gut-friendly herb intake!

Keep your essential oils close

Essential oils are pure plant extracts that are potent and powerful helpers when it comes to easing discomfort and helping the body thrive. Essential oils like fennel, basil, ginger work wonders.

Detox regularly

Do regular kidney and vitamin water doses to keep toxins from staying in your organs and body. Check out this Vitamin Water I have, which helps flush your kidneys and liver and get those organs working properly.

Eat Consciously

Be mindful of the quality of your produce and find out where your food comes from. Things like pesticides, GMOs, chemicals, additives and food colors can wreak havoc on your gut microbiome. Try to source clean organic produce as much as possible.

All of these habits will help diversify and bring balance to the flora in your gut.

Your gut is your inner compass. How things are processed in your gut and the food you give it will affect your mental health, and everything else.

Bringing balance to the bacteria in your gut will take time. Have patience and perseverance and you will get there. Healthy Gut, Healthy You! Let's get our guts and minds happy and healthy.
